Hollingdean Parking

RE66 VWH

Silver Hyundai i20

  • This silver Hyundai is recognised as belonging to a resident of the adjoining Resident Parking Zone U (Lewes Road and Coombe Road area).

  • Although the owner has clearly been able to purchase a resident permit for their vehicle in the past (which is still displayed in the windscreen now - several years after it expired), the owner has clearly also opted to simply use the 'free' parking in Hollingdean to store their vehicle, rather than continue to obtain their own permit.

  • For this reason, the driver keeps their vehicle towards the lower end of Upper Hollingdean Road - as close as they are able to their own home on the other side of the railway tracks. For the benefit of the doubt, it is known that the owner of this car has not simply moved to Hollingdean.

  • This is a classic case of displacement parking, which we see an increasing amount of here in Hollingdean. Instead of paying for permits, residents in adjoining areas use Hollingdean instead and then walk back and forth. This adds significant additional pressure to the areas of Hollingdean where they abut these existing zones: the lower end of Upper Hollingdean Road to the East, and Hollingbury Crescent against Fiveways to the North West.

  • Although parking here is 'free', having non-residents use the streets in this fashion unfortunately leaves local residents struggling to find spots for their own cars. Moreover, they have to deal with the extra congestion, pollution, and noise that comes with their streets being used as a carpark for these selfish owners.
