GY10 UYU
Brown Volkswagen Transporter
One of the big parking issues Hollingdean faces is unwanted camper vans, of which there are literally hundreds scattered across Hollingdean.
This was also a significant issue in Surrenden, and one of the tipping points for parking permits being introduced in that area. Now, they are all parked up in Hollingdean instead, the owners using Hollingdean as a 'free' place to store their recreational vehicles for the majority of the year, and only moving them for one or two months of the year when the summer arrives.
GY10 UYU is one of those vehicles. Much like GY02 KYW, the owner is known to not live in the Hollingdean area, and only parks here because it's free. Also much like GY02 KYW, it moves extremely rarely.
Residents have reported that it remains unmoved, parked in Hollingdean, for several months at a time - presumedly until the owner next decides to take a camping holiday. At which point it disappears for a few days, and reappears right back in our neighbourhood.
For example, it appeared on Hollingbury Crescent in early August 2024 and did not move again for nearly the following four months, at which point it moved for less than an hour before being parked back on the same street, directly opposite.
After that, it did not move again for another four months, at which point residents reported that a recovery service was helping the owner start the van (presumedly due to a flat battery having not moved or run for so long). It - again - moved away for less than two hours before reappearing, again parked on Hollingbury Crescent, and again unmoved ever since.
This use of Hollingdean for 'free' camper van storage adds masses of additional complications to the residenst who live here. These are large vehicles, often left in awkward positions blocking visibility for junctions. Of course, them being left here means that local residents are also left with less available parking to use themselves...
According to this van's MOT history, it travelled just sixty miles between 2023 and 2024, and less than 5,000 miles the year before that. This would explain why residents have recognised that it has quite literally been left in Hollingdean for the entire period.
In mid-May 2025, a resident spotted that this campervan had moved from Hollingdean to a spot on Preston Drove, and then Ditchling Road some days later, marking the first extended period of time that it had not been left in our neighbourhood in the past several years.
Now with a valid (albeit short-term) resident permit for Zone J, and a For Sale sign in the window, this goes to confirm that the owner is indeed a non-Hollingdean resident who has been using our streets (for many years) as long-term storage for their unloved camper van. All the while, they could - and should - have had a permit for their vehicle to keep it in the area where they live.
Our residents can only hope that they do find a buyer and that this van doesn't simply end up being relegated back onto our streets in the future, as the owner's neighbours have done.
